The roadmap

Six steps from a spark to a finished project

Research feels intimidating because no one shows you the whole path. Here it is — and every guide on this site maps back to one of these steps.

Step 01

Find your question

Turn a broad interest into one specific, answerable question you can actually investigate.

Step 02

Learn the landscape

Read what's already known about your topic so you're building on real work, not starting from zero.

Step 03

Choose a method

Decide how you'll investigate: an experiment, a public dataset, a survey, or an analysis.

Step 04

Do the work

Collect and record your data carefully and honestly. This is what makes it research.

Step 05

Write it up

Turn your findings into a clear paper, poster, or report someone else could understand.

Step 06

Share it

Enter a competition, submit to a student journal, or present. Sharing makes it an accomplishment.

Research shouldn't be gatekept.

We believe any curious student can do real research — not just the ones with the right connections. Every guide here is free, plain-spoken, and built to get you from "I have no idea where to start" to "I finished it."

Questions

Before you start

Do I need top grades or a special school?

No. Research rewards curiosity and persistence more than grades. These guides assume you're starting from zero and walk you through every step in order.

Does any of this cost money?

No. Everything here is free to read, and the methods we recommend rely on free tools and publicly available resources wherever possible.

I don't have a lab or fancy equipment. Can I still do research?

Yes. Many strong high-school projects use public datasets, surveys, code, or analysis of existing work — none of which require a lab. We'll help you pick a method that fits what you have.

How do I actually begin?

Read the "How to get started with research" guide first. It gives you the big picture and a concrete first task you can finish today.
